Battlefield 3 developer DICE is “only starting to scratch the surface” of what its “incredible” Frostbite 2 engine is capable of, the studio has boldly claimed.
Speaking in the latest issue of US retail mag Game Informer, exec producer Patrick Bach stressed that just because BF3 has earthquake effects and other destruction, it doesn’t mean the FPS will revel in fantasy set pieces like Split/Second before it.
“It needs to be believable,” he said. “You can’t have earthquakes all over the place while you’re running and gunning.
“We want to have set pieces that fit the map. Set pieces can be more than big explosions and big animations. We have some cool things up our sleeves.”
Bach explained that the studio had to rewrite its Frostbite engine from scratch for the sequel, with additions such as real-time lighting and large-scale destruction fronting the bill.
Art director Gustav Tileby said of the Battlefield 3 tech – which Bach claims allows for a next-gen game on current-gen systems – “We’re only starting to scratch the surface of what we can do with the engine.”
Frostbite 2 has been described by EA as “incredible technology that takes animation, destruction, lighting, scale and audio to new heights”.
